The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
