Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge specific decisions made by the official, following the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
